Skin Health During The Winter Months

While we don’t wear our parkas year-round, we do wear our skin year-round. That means we MUST maintain our skin year-round and keep it as healthy as possible. During the winter months, it can be a challenge to do that as our skin deals with cold temperatures, low humidity, and indoor heating. Here are some tips to help you keep your skin healthy during the winter months:

Hydrate (From Within): Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated from the inside out. This helps combat the dryness caused by the cold weather, and potential dehydration caused by indoor heating.  

Limit Long Hot Showers: Hot water can strip your skin of natural oils, making it drier. Opt for lukewarm water and try to limit your shower time.

Protect Your Skin: Wear protective clothing, such as scarves, hats, and gloves, to shield your skin from the harsh winter elements. Especially during windy days, make sure as much of your skin is covered when outside. Be mindful of fabrics that may irritate your skin. Do your best to use soft materials like cotton and avoid wool directly against your skin if it tends to be irritating.

Sunscreen: Even in winter, it's important to use sunscreen, especially if you're spending time outdoors. Snow can reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure.  We always recommend the natural stuff, so read the ingredient list before you buy!

Healthy Diet: Consume foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants to support overall skin health. Foods like fatty fish, nuts, seeds, and fruits can contribute to a healthy complexion.

Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of essential oils. Limit the use of harsh exfoliants, as they can exacerbate dryness.

Use a Humidifier: Indoor heating systems can reduce the humidity levels in your home, leading to dry skin. Using a humidifier can help maintain optimal moisture levels in the air.

Moisturize: Use a rich, hydrating moisturizer to keep your skin well-nourished.  Apply moisturizer right after showering or washing your face to lock in moisture.

Stay Active: Regular exercise promotes healthy blood circulation, which is beneficial for your skin. However, make sure to protect your skin from harsh weather conditions when exercising outdoors.

Lip Care: Don't forget about your lips. Use good lip balm to prevent chapping and consider applying a thicker layer at night for extra hydration.
